Celta made victims by Valencia - Soccer

@ 08:47 AM (44 months, 1 day ago)
Valencia went second in La Liga tournament with a 1-0 win at Celta Vigo on Saturday (April 8).

Miguel Angel Angulo scored the only goal of the game on the half-hour with a fierce drive from just outside the penalty area which just beat Jose Manuel Pinto's dive.

Jose Perera came closest for the home side but they could not break Valencia's impressive defence and Quique Sanchez Flores' men held on to go ahead of Real Madrid soccer team based on meetings between the two sides.

Valencia visited sixth-placed Celta Vigo on Saturday looking to capitalise on Real Madrid dropping points against Real Sociedad and take second in La Liga championship.

The home side had a reasonable shout for a penalty on 28 minutes when Miguel appear to pull down football player  Daniel De Ridder in the box but their appeals were turned away.

Ruben Baraja was then caught in possession and Ernesto Canobbio fed Fernando Baiano whose shot was well blocked by Raul Albiol.

But Valencia scored the opening goal a minute later against the run of play.

Baraja's fine long ball found Mauro Regueiro and the Uruguay forward did well to tee up Miguel Angel Angulo whose well-struck shot beat Jose Manuel Pinto's dive.

Five minutes before half-time, Valencia could have made it two when Regueiro played a fine one-two with Pablo Aimar and beared down on goal.

But he will not want to watch too many replays of his final effort which went well wide of the target.

Early in the second half of the game, Valencia's topscorer David Villa ran straight at the heart of the Celta defence but he put his shot too close to Pinto who then did well to keep out Regueiro's weak effort from the rebound.

Celta coach Fernando Vazquez made a double substitution and his side started to pose more of a threat.

Canobbio's fine through-ball picked out one of those replacements, Jose Perera, but he could not squeeze the ball past Santiago Canizares at his near post on the hour-mark.

Valencia's resolute defence held out to secure a win which puts them level on points with Real Madrid but, despite an inferior goal difference, Quique Sanchez Flores' men are actually on front based on the meetings between the two sides.

Celta stay in sixth.
